Band swings back to the future
The Adamstown based Dungeon Big Band will join the Newcastle University Choir for an afternoon of 1930's and 40's nostalgia on Sunday July 26 at 2 pm.
Formed six years ago, The Dungeon Big Band cut their teeth reprising pre and post war swing and will be in their element at this concert.
“What makes this gig so special,” band leader Rod Barnes said this week, “is the combining of a seventeen piece swing big band with an eighty voice choir in a space like the Newcastle University Great Hall - with a dance floor in front of the stage. Pure nostalgia - unashamedly and without apology!” The University Choir was formed over 25 years ago, and is excited about joining forces with the big band and presenting a concert full to the brim of great melodies. The choir will be directed by Dr Jennifer Barnes.
Rod says the band has spent years getting as close and true as possible to the sound and feel of the greats such as Glenn Miller, Woody Herman and Benny Goodman .
“As a result, Golden Wedding, American Patrol and Take the A Train are something of signature tunes and the guys and girls in the band really enjoy playing those and the other great songs of that era.”
“While big band music and The Dungeon Big Band have moved on to more progressive and contemporary songs and composers, it's great to be able to return to where it all began: for those old enough to reminisce and for those younger to discover the full, rich and engaging sound of massed voices and of a full strength big band. “And, maybe, to remember or discover what it means and feels like to dance in real sync with your partner.” Enquiries & Ticket Sales: 4954 8781 MEDIA CONTACT: Rod Barnes, Mob. 0407 002 397 For further information: www.dungeonjazz.com.au
